Exploring the Hidden Gem of Amberg: City Gates, Canals, and Beer Gardens
Hello everyone! If you saw my latest video, you know I recently spent a fantastic day exploring Amberg, a beautiful city in the Upper Palatinate (Oberpfalz). Amberg is famous for its exceptionally well-preserved city walls and gates, and I want to share some of the highlights from my trip with you today.
The “City Spectacles” and the Vils River
The most iconic sight in Amberg is undoubtedly the Stadtbrille (City Spectacles). This unique structure is a combination of a gate and a bridge over the Vils River. When you see its arches reflecting in the water, it looks exactly like a pair of spectacles. I even took a walk through some of the local wooden bridges to get a better view of the surrounding architecture.

A City of Art and Air
Did you know Amberg is known as a Luftmuseumsstadt (Air Museum City)? You’ll find the Luftmuseum (Air Museum) housed in a striking yellow building.

The city is filled with fascinating sculptures that reflect this theme, ranging from bronze faces to massive divided globes and intricate human figures.

Life in the Old Town
Walking through the old town feels like stepping back in time, with beautiful views of St. Martin’s Church towering over the canals.

Even the local shops, like the City-Reinigung, add to the charm of the narrow streets. While some parts of the city are undergoing renovations to keep them beautiful, the overall atmosphere remains historic and inviting.

Beer Gardens and Local Culture
We had perfect weather for the trip, with temperatures reaching a sunny 23-24°C.
You can’t visit this region without stopping at a beer garden! I enjoyed a refreshing glass from Brauerei Winkler. I even spotted a hilarious “Emergency Case” on a wall—a red box containing beer to be used in case of “extreme under-hopping”!

My faithful travel companion, a very tired pug, certainly enjoyed the shade of the beer garden after our long walk.

Modern Touches and Moving On
The city also features some impressive modern engineering, like the bridge featuring a unique pulley system.

As the day came to an end, I hopped back into the van to continue the journey toward Munich, with the dashboard showing a warm 30.5°C outside as we hit the road.

Amberg was a truly successful stop, and I hope these pictures inspire you to visit!
